Mackay students gained hands-on experience and valuable insight into future career opportunities when they took part in CQUniversity Australia's Career Tasters program at the Mackay City campus.

Held from the 10-14 August, the learning experience gave Year 10 students the opportunity to explore the hair and beauty industry through practical activities designed to reflect real workplace and study environments.

Students learned hairstyling, braiding, makeup application and photography techniques while gaining an understanding of industry expectations and potential career pathways. Some even had the chance to practise applying clip-in hair extensions on visiting State Member for Mackay, Nigel Dalton MP, creating a colourful new look for the local MP.

Mr Dalton visited the campus to meet with students and observe the hands-on learning taking place as part of the program, which is jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments.

CQUniversity Deputy Director, TAFE Marketing Mark Stanley said Career Tasters provided an invaluable opportunity for students to explore future study and career options in a practical and engaging way.

"Career Tasters gives students the opportunity to experience different industries firsthand and gain a clearer understanding of the pathways available to them," Mr Stanley said.

"By participating in hands-on activities and working alongside our experienced TAFE educators, students can discover new interests, build confidence and make more informed decisions about their future."

Students participating in the Mackay program engaged in activities designed to mirror real industry practices while discovering the skills, qualifications and career opportunities available through vocational education and training.

The program introduces students to a range of industries including health and support practices, early years education, construction, engineering, automotive trades and hair and beauty.

Year 10 student Shelby Rocke said the experience helped her better understand where her interests lay within the industry.

"I've always been interested in hair and makeup, but after trying the hair activities, I realised I probably prefer makeup," Shelby said.

"It's helping me work out what I'd like to do in the future."

Shelby said she was considering pursuing a Diploma of Beauty Therapy after school.

Following his visit, Mr Dalton said the program played an important role in helping young people explore their future options.

"The Career Tasters courses allow participants to see what it might be like if they started learning in a particular field," he said.

"It's so much better to be enjoying your learning, and you get a much better outcome."

"I congratulate all the facilitators, organisers and teachers who make these opportunities possible and give young people the chance to explore what they might want to study in the future."

Mr Stanley said Career Tasters reflected CQUniversity's commitment to supporting regional communities and creating opportunities for young people to explore their aspirations.

"As a leading regional university, we are proud to provide accessible learning experiences that connect education with real career outcomes," he said.

Career Tasters is available to eligible Year 10 students across Queensland and is a joint initiative of the Australian Government and Queensland Government.
