CQU health focus kicking global goals
CQUniversity is leading the pack for health and wellbeing across its campuses and in its communities, with fresh international support for its unique regional role.
CQU has been named an International University Sports Federation (FISU) Healthy Campus, joining forces with more than 200 universities globally driving inclusive health and physical activity in higher education.
UniSport Australia endorsed the new certification, and paid tribute to CQU’s wide range of health initiatives.
Since 2025, CQUniversity’s SPORT Strategy has been growing sport and physical activity participation, passion and knowledge on campuses, across regional communities and into peak performance.

It reflects CQU’s expertise, leadership and advocacy across Sport and exercise, Physical activity, Occupational and Rehabilitation Therapies, or the handy acronym SPORT.
The Healthy Campus certification also reflects:
- Community-connected and research-informed initiatives including 10,000 Steps free physical activity program and U-BEACH beach accessibility collaboration
- Mindwaves 2.0: CQU’s Mental Health and Wellbeing Plan 2024-2028, a coordinated and culture-building framework to grow healthy connection for CQU’s 30,000 students and more than 2000 staff through peer-to-peer engagement
- Sponsorship and in-kind support for community and professional sport and physical activity initiatives across regional Australia
- CQU’s strategic approach to growing active spaces and initiatives across its 11 campuses
- Enthusiastic participation in UniSport regional and national student competitions
- Formal support for elite athletes, coaches and sports professionals to study at CQU, recognised by membership of the Australian Institute of Sport’s Elite Sport Education Network (ESEN).
CQUniversity Director of Sport Strategy Professor Fabio Serpiello said the CQUniversity was uniquely placed to achieve the goals of the FISU Healthy Campus Program, and foster sustainably healthy lifestyles for students, staff and communities.
“We know sport is central to Australian life – and in regional Australia, it’s at the heart of connecting communities,” Prof Serpiello said.
“CQUniversity partners with sporting clubs and organisations to help grow both participation and health and wellbeing benefits – and so our students are equipped to shape healthier communities in their careers,” he explained.
Global stage, healthy communities
“Particularly as Australia prepares for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, CQU is harnessing all our expertise, our people, and our places, to really maximise the opportunity to grow sport participation and healthy lifestyles.”
The FISU Healthy Campus recognition highlights healthy campus management, sport and physical activity, nutrition, disease prevention, mental and social health, risk behaviour and environment, sustainability and social responsibility.
UniSport CEO Mark Sinderberry congratulated CQUniversity on taking the next step in the Healthy Campus program.
“CQUniversity’s certification is a significant achievement that reflects its commitment to moving beyond participation in the Healthy Campus program and actively embedding health and wellbeing across its campuses and communities... to deliver better outcomes for its students, staff and broader university community,” Mr Sinderberry said.
By becoming part of the Healthy Campus program, CQU reinforces its focus on best-practice approaches to health and wellbeing, and grows access to a global exchange of ideas.
