Conversation starts community connection at CQUniversity's End Loneliness Day

The power of a simple conversation was celebrated at CQUniversity's Rockhampton campus today as students, staff and community members came together for End Loneliness Day, proving that one conversation can be the first step towards building stronger, more connected communities.
Held today on Wednesday 8 July, the annual event invited people to step away from their busy lives, meet someone new and discover how small moments of connection can make a lasting difference.
Now in its fifth year at CQUniversity, End Loneliness Day forms part of the University's ongoing commitment to supporting wellbeing, inclusion and community connection.
Sponsored by CQUniversity, End Loneliness Inc, the initiative has grown from a locally led effort into a national day of awareness and action, with events taking place across Australia.
CQUniversity Associate Vice-President Rockhampton and Central Highlands Regions Kim Harrington said the strong turnout reflected a shared understanding that everyone has a role to play in creating more welcoming communities.
"Loneliness can affect anyone, regardless of their age, background or circumstances, and research suggests around one in four Australians experience loneliness," Ms Harrington said.
"That means every one of us is likely to know someone who feels disconnected, even if they never say a word about it.
“Sometimes all it takes is someone noticing them, saying hello or inviting them to join a conversation.
"It's wonderful to see so many people come together today because connection doesn't have to be complicated. A smile, a conversation over coffee or asking someone how they're going can make a genuine difference and remind people they're not alone."
Throughout the morning, attendees used conversation starter cards to break the ice, share stories and build new relationships, demonstrating how simple interactions can help foster a greater sense of belonging.
Ms Harrington said while End Loneliness Day was an important annual event, CQUniversity remained committed to creating opportunities for connection every day of the year.
"Connection is embedded throughout the student experience through Campus Life activities, clubs and societies, mentoring programs, wellbeing initiatives, community partnerships and our Smile Zone," she said.
"But creating connected communities extends well beyond our campuses. We all have the ability to make someone feel welcome, whether that's introducing yourself to a neighbour, inviting a colleague for coffee or checking in on someone you haven't spoken to for a while.
"A conversation can start a friendship. A conversation can change your life. If everyone leaves today inspired to make just one small connection, together we can build communities where fewer people experience loneliness."
End Loneliness Day is held annually on the second Wednesday in July, encouraging individuals, workplaces, schools and communities across Australia to strengthen social connection and create places where everyone feels seen, valued and included.
Following the event, attendees were encouraged to continue the conversation by checking in with a neighbour, inviting a colleague for coffee, joining a local group or volunteering in their community.
