CQUniversity and Sheldon College have joined forces to launch an innovative new micro-credential designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and perspectives needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

The Globally Minded Future Ready Citizens micro-credential will be available to Sheldon College Year 10 students from next term, providing learners with an opportunity to explore their role as  global citizens with both the right and responsibility to shape a more inclusive and sustainable future.

The course is the first of its kind in Australia to be based on UNESCO’s 2023 Recommendation on Education for Peace, Human Rights and Sustainable Development. It offers students the opportunity to: understand what it means to be a global citizen; recognise the importance of knowing, caring and taking action on local and global issues; appreciate the multiple identities people hold; explore human rights and how these are balanced with responsibilities; examine the concept of peace and build skills of conflict resolution; and appreciate the complexities of balancing the environmental, economic and social pillars of sustainability.

Sheldon College Principal Ms Kate Mortimer said the partnership reflects the College’s strategic commitment to providing rich co-curricular experiences and strong community engagement, preparing students for success in a rapidly changing world.

"At Sheldon College, we believe education should empower students to think beyond their immediate environment and engage meaningfully with the wider world." Ms Mortimer said.

"This micro-credential provides students with valuable opportunities to develop global awareness, empathy and critical thinking skills that will help them become informed and responsible citizens."

CQUniversity Senior Lecturer in Education Dr Karena Menzie-Ballantyne said the collaboration showcased the power of partnerships in creating innovative learning opportunities for young people.

"UNESCO’s 2023 Recommendation highlights the importance of students understanding concepts of lobal citizenship, Peace, Human Rights and Sustainability and developing the skills and motivation to take action in their local and global communities as they prepare for future study, work and community life," Dr Menzie-Ballantyne said.

"Through this micro-credential, students are encouraged to explore diverse perspectives, reflect on their own identities and consider how they can contribute positively to the world around them.

"We are delighted to partner with Sheldon College to deliver a learning experience that supports students to become globally minded, future-ready citizens."

The micro-credential forms part of CQUniversity's ongoing commitment to providing flexible and contemporary learning pathways that complement school education and prepare students for future success.
