A once-in-a-lifetime mission trip to Africa to help locals build a school showed CQUniversity (CQU) trade teacher Aidan Feddersen how powerful skill-sharing can be in changing lives.

Now Aidan is using that experience and his many years as a tradesman and teacher for a “chance to shape the future of the industry and support the next generation”.

Aidan has been teaching plumbing at CQU Mackay Ooralea since 2024, a calling he has found tremendously rewarding – and he’s encouraged other tradespeople to take the same leap.

Before joining CQU, Aidan worked in commercial irrigation for the City of Perth and also taught apprentices in the glazing industry across the manufacturing and construction industries.

“CQU was a rare opportunity to teach again and it was a role I didn’t want to miss out on,” he said.

“The most rewarding part is watching apprentices grow in confidence, capability, and pride in their trade.”

After starting with CQU he put his teaching skills to the test by mentoring one student who was a WorldSkills competitor.

“Supporting my apprentice at the National WorldSkills competition in Brisbane in 2025 and seeing the strong support network across the trades was a great reminder of the strength of teaching," he said.

“The student ended up earning a Medallion of Excellence at WorldSkills.

“I’ve also seen several students achieve Apprentice of the Year awards.”

He said the support and collaboration also extends to his teaching colleagues.

“CQU is full of passionate trade educators, and I’d encourage anyone to give teaching a go,” he said.

“Back yourself – your experience and willingness to learn can make a real difference.”
