With workforce shortages continuing to impact key industries across regional Queensland, CQUniversity’s 2026 TAFE Careers Expo has played a vital role in connecting Central Queenslanders with real jobs, subsidised training and new career pathways.
Held on Wednesday 21 January across CQUniversity’s Gladstone, Rockhampton and Mackay campuses, the Expo brought together employers, training specialists and more than 400 future students to directly tackle skills shortages identified in the Australian Government’s 2025 Skills Priority List.
Occupations experiencing regional shortages include machine operators, chefs, nurses, health workers, mining and equipment technicians and childcare educators - industries that were strongly represented at the Expo.
CQUniversity Acting Deputy Vice-President VET and Business Development Cathryn Jackson said the Expo was designed as a direct workforce solution, not just an information event.
“This was about more than showcasing courses, it was about connecting people with real employers who are actively recruiting and then supporting them into the right training pathway,” Ms Jackson said.
“Through initiatives like the Queensland Government’s Fee-Free TAFE and subsidised vocational training, we’re removing financial barriers and giving people genuine opportunities to gain the qualifications that local industries are asking for.”
The Expo attracted attendees of all ages, from school students exploring future careers to mature-age residents seeking a career change, re-entry to the workforce or upskilling opportunities.
Attendees were able to explore local job opportunities, learn about apprenticeships and traineeships, access study and support services and receive advice on funding options that may significantly reduce, or even remove, course costs.
Yeppoon State High School Year 12 student Cyan Viney attended the Expo in Rockhampton and said the event was exactly what she needed to confirm that her dream of studying hairdressing was not just a possibility but something she could start in March while still at school.
“Hairdressing has always been something I’ve dreamed about, but I didn’t know how to turn that dream into a plan,” Cyan said.
“The Expo connected me with the right advice and support, and now I know I can start my qualification in March while finishing Year 12. It’s exciting to finally see a clear pathway into the career I want.”
CQUniversity is actively working with local industries to deliver targeted vocational training aligned with workforce needs, ensuring regional Queenslanders can gain the skills required to secure employment close to home.
As Queensland’s only dual-sector university, CQUniversity offers both TAFE and higher education qualifications, allowing students to progress from entry-level vocational training through to diplomas, degrees and postgraduate study - all within the one institution.
“We’re a genuine one-stop shop for our region,” Ms Jackson said.
“From school leavers to career changers, we’re strengthening the pipeline between people and employers and helping keep skilled workers in Central Queensland.”
CQUniversity TAFE offers a wide range of courses with multiple intakes throughout the year. Even for those who missed the Expo, applications remain open for many programs.
