For more than 18 years, Tammy Murray has championed vocational education and training in Central Queensland – a commitment that saw her inducted as an ‘AUSTAFE Queensland Legend’ at the recent AUSTAFE Awards in Brisbane.

Tammy, who is CQUniversity’s Deputy Dean of Vocational Education & Training for the School of Health, Medical and Applied Sciences and School of Access Education, was one of nine recognised in the category for their contributions to VET training at the event on 6 November.

“Being inducted as an AUSTAFE Queensland Legend and receiving this award is truly humbling. It’s an incredible honour to be recognised in this way, especially alongside so many respected and dedicated peers in the VET sector,” Tammy said.

“This award is not just a personal milestone, as no one achieves alone.  It’s a reflection of the collaborative spirit and shared commitment of the many colleagues and teams I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside over the years. I’m deeply grateful and proud to be part of a sector that has the power to change lives.”

She said she’s deeply appreciated her 18 years working at TAFE and CQU.

During that time, I’ve had the privilege of working across various locations and roles, each contributing to a rich and rewarding career in vocational education and training,” she said.

What I love most about my role is the sense of purpose it brings. Whether it’s working directly with learners or contributing to strategic initiatives, every part of the job is grounded in making a real difference.

“I’ve seen firsthand how education can transform lives and being part of that journey; supporting learners, empowering teams, and shaping the future of VET is incredibly fulfilling.”

Fellow CQU colleagues, Nick van Peperstraten (Deputy Director, Student Advising), was a finalist in the Emerging Leader Support Services category, while Shaun MacDonald (Senior VET Teacher – Electrical), was nominated in the Emerging Leader Education and Training category.

Tammy said she was proud to see CQU staff and the jobs they do so well-represented at the awards.

VET education is vital because it equips people with practical skills and pathways to meaningful employment. It’s inclusive, adaptable, and deeply connected to community and industry needs,” she said.

“VET opens doors for individuals from all walks of life and plays a crucial role in building a skilled, resilient workforce. It’s not always easy work, but it’s important work and I’m proud to be part of a sector that continues to evolve and respond to the needs of learners and our communities.”
