CQUniversity has achieved a major milestone in the latest Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, climbing into the 401-500 band globally – a significant leap from last year’s 501-600 position.

The achievement comes amid intense international competition, with a record 2,191 universities ranked, up from 2,092 the previous year.

CQUniversity’s rise was driven by strong improvements across key performance areas including:

  • Research Quality – up 78 places, with CQUniversity now benchmarked above the upper quartile of global institutions.
  • Industry Impact – up 63 places, reflecting increased engagement and innovation with industry partners.
  • International Outlook – up 167 places, demonstrating growing global collaboration and a diverse academic community.
  • Research Environment – up 45 places, signalling continued investment in research capability.

CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Nick Klomp said the result reflected the University’s relentless focus on delivering world-class research, industry connections and global partnerships while maintaining its commitment to regional Australia.

“To move into the world’s top 500 universities is a remarkable achievement, particularly at a time when more universities than ever are competing for recognition,” Professor Klomp said.

“This ranking is proof that a university headquartered in regional Queensland can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the world, thanks to the dedication of our staff, students, partners and communities.”

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings evaluate universities on five key pillars:

  • Teaching
  • Research Environment
  • Research Quality
  • Industry Income
  • International Outlook

Professor Klomp said the improvement in Research Quality and International Outlook were especially pleasing, demonstrating the University’s growing global influence.

“This ranking is evidence of the impact our researchers are having on the world stage, and the opportunities we are creating for students and communities here in Australia and beyond,” he said.
