The World Finals of the Horizon Hydrogen Grand Prix (H2GP) in Germany has resulted in two CQUniversity-sponsored teams of revved-up high schoolers cross the finish line with medals and other accolades.

Rockhampton’s Kingsley College team (Kingsley Kachow) won the Girls in STEM race by one lap over the California’s Oakwood High – a team that hasn’t lost a single race in the last four years.

Meanwhile the Gladstone team ‘Faith & Furious’ (from Faith Baptist Christian School) took out bronze medals in two races – the main Stock race and Girls in STEM.

The Girls in Stem race comprised 11 teams, with two classed in the Hybrid category (more advanced cars). Kingsley managed to win the race, surpassing even the more advanced cars.

Teams of high school students from around the world competed by building and racing 1:10 scale, hydrogen-powered remote-controlled cars to test their knowledge of renewable energy, engineering, and design.

The Central Queensland teams have been supported and sponsored during the local, state and national H2GP competitions by CQUniversity.

The program aims to provide the school students with skills and potential pathways to careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

CQUniversity also supported the inaugural North Queensland qualifiers this year, which saw including Ingham’s Gilroy Santa Maria College’s ‘Velocity Raptors’ who also competed at the World Finals.

CQUniversity’s Director of the Centre for Hydrogen and Renewable Energy, congratulated the CQ teams on their achievements.

“Our regional Queensland Hydrogen Grand Prix teams have shined at the world finals in Germany,” he said.

“These teams have demonstrated not just STEM skills, but leadership, teamwork and resilience. They are proof that our regional talent is global talent, and our future is assured with such quality leaders and problem-solvers entering the workforce over the coming years.”
