New scholarship to power future engineers
CQUniversity and the Sir William Tyree Foundation have launched a new scholarship that aims to support the next generation of engineering students.
The CQUniCares Sir William Tyree Engineering Scholarship will provide crucial support to students for up to four years, with each scholarship valued at a potential total of $64,000.
The scholarship, which will be made available from Term 1, 2026 aims to encourage and assist students pursuing a career in engineering - with a preference for those studying electrical or mechanical majors.
CQUniversity thanked the Sir William Tyree Foundation for the new scholarship which he said would have a profound impact on students who might otherwise face barriers to their education.
Deputy Director Philanthropy and Social Impact Francois Gallais said the eligibility criteria for the initiative focused on equity factors such as financial hardship, rural or remote backgrounds, female students and support for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander or South Sea Islanders.
The Sir William Tyree Foundation was founded by Sir William Tyree in the early 1970s, becoming one of Australia’s leading philanthropic organisations. Its philanthropic activities are funding undergraduate engineering scholarships throughout Australia, raising awareness about careers in engineering and medical science, and research in both medical science and engineering to improve Australia for future generations.
Today, the Foundation is funded by the Tyree Group of Companies, which manufacturers distribution and power transformers for the utility, industrial, mining and generation market sectors in Mittagong. In Melbourne the business manufactures specialised and standard wire and cable products for a broad range of industries. This model ensures that a significant portion of the company's profits is dedicated to continuing Sir William's legacy of giving back to the community.
“We are delighted to be partnering with CQUniversity to provide this opportunity to students needing support. My father believed strongly in the power of education to transform lives,” Robyn Fennell (nee Tyree), Chair Sir William Tyree Foundation said.
The CQUniCares Sir William Tyree Engineering Scholarship will be open for applications from October 2025 – check out the Scholarships page for more info.
