A turtle rescuer, a botanist, a carbon researcher and a footy legend walk into a brewery…and it promises to be a highlight of National Science Week in Central Queensland.

CQUniversity’s STEM Central team and its CQ STEM Hub partners will hold a ‘Science in the Brewery’ event in Gladstone featuring a fascinating speaker line-up.

Event organiser, CQUniversity Associate Professor Linda Pfeiffer said the idea behind the Science in the Brewery event was to make STEM more accessible for the general public and demonstrate how critical science, technology, engineering and maths is to our everyday lives.

“Whether you're a scientist, a beer aficionado, or simply curious about the latest in science and technology, this event promises an evening of learning, tasting and networking,” Assoc Prof Pfeiffer said.

Dr Heidi Edmonds, a senior researcher at Beyond Zero Emissions will speak about the push for industry decarbonisation in Central Queensland and how science, industry and art insect to create her unique perspective on sustainability.

She’ll be joined by former NRL player Sid Domic and botanist Julie Hentzsch who will share their journey of transforming native bush foods into products that blend Indigenous knowledge and science to share their love for Country.

And finally, former coal quality technician Brody Gavranich will share how he ended up working for the clean technology sector at Alpha APHA, which is pioneering Australia’s first high-purity aluminium processing facility.

The event is supported by the Australian Government’s Inspiring Australia Initiative as part of National Science Week 2025.
