North Queenslander Luke Erbacher was first introduced to physiotherapy while playing Rugby League but now he is on-track to becoming one, after enrolling in CQUniversity’s Bachelor of Physiotherapy in Cairns.

After finishing school in 2020, Luke started an electrical apprenticeship, but after a time, decided that he had a stronger interest in attending university and pursuing a career in allied health.

After making the decision, Luke started looking at course options, and at the time there was nothing delivered locally that interested him, so he made the move to Brisbane to start a podiatry degree.

While studying in Brisbane, Luke discovered that CQUniversity would be offering a full physiotherapy degree in Cairns, meaning that he could return to the region to study a course that he had always been interested in.

“During my years of playing Rugby League, I was constantly surrounded by physiotherapists and was always intrigued by their ability to assist in diagnosing the issues I had and formulating an approach to fix them, so I could get back on the field.

“These interactions grew my interest in the profession and furthered my desire to assist other individuals in improving their health.

“When I found out last year that physiotherapy was being offered to the region, it enabled me to pursue my true passion for the career whilst benefiting financially with the ability to move back home,” said Luke.

“Although I have only just completed my first term of study, it has been a real eye-opener in understanding how a physiotherapist interacts with patients and medical professionals.

“There is an incredible amount of in-depth knowledge on how to forge positive relationships with people and ensure a comfortable and positive experience for everyone involved.”

Luke also said he was excited about the career opportunities available in allied health, which are being driven by the high demand for qualified professionals.

“It is well documented that Australia has a shortage in its allied health workforces, especially physiotherapy, so I am confident that my qualification will lead to great employment opportunities in the future.

“There are many opportunities here in Cairns, as well as in smaller rural and regional communities that don’t have consistent access to allied health services.

“Likewise, when I was recently in Japan for the ski season, I met quite a few graduate physiotherapists who were working there seasonally for the winter. I also think that would be a fun experience to pursue in the future.”

CQUniversity’s Physiotherapy course is delivered on-campus in Bundaberg, Cairns and Rockhampton.

More information about the course can be found on the Physiotherapy course page on the CQUniversity website
