CQUniversity's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music’s Queensland Regional Ensemble Program (QREP) brought together 27 high school-aged musicians from across Far North Queensland for two days of focused music-making, collaboration and performance.

Hosted at St Augustine’s College in Cairns, the event welcomed students from Mareeba, Innisfail, Atherton and Cairns.

Participants took part in jazz and contemporary ensemble workshops and masterclasses led by Bachelor of Music staff Dr Peter McKenzie, Jason Smyth-Tomkins, Patty Preece, and Dr David Reaston.

A key feature of the event was the involvement of professional musicians from the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1 RAR) Band, who travelled from Townsville to mentor and perform alongside students.

"Their contribution was highly valued and left a strong impression on everyone involved," Dr McKenzie said.

"We appreciate the support from the 1 RAR Band, Cherie Spannenburg, Majella Fallon, and the team at St Augustine’s College for their generous support and for providing a welcoming venue."

In addition to rehearsals and performance activities, students had the chance to learn about CQU’s Bachelor of Music program and SUN (Start Uni Now) courses available to high school students.

"The structure of the weekend mirrored the kind of learning that takes place in CQU’s music degree, giving students first-hand insight into tertiary music study," Dr McKenzie said.

"Career pathways in music were also discussed, helping students explore future options in performance, teaching and the broader arts industry.

"The program was further supported by CQU music alumni and current students based in the region, many of whom are professional musicians and educators in Far North Queensland."

The Queensland Regional Ensemble Program (QREP) is an outreach initiative of CQU's Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music and part of the University's broader commitment to supporting regional arts education and creating pathways for young musicians across Queensland.
