From classroom to culture; Japanese students experience life ‘Down Under’ with CQU study tour

Students from two Japanese universities embarked on study tours with CQUniversity in Cairns and Brisbane recently, providing a cultural exchange that broadened horizons and honed invaluable skills.
Hailing from Meikai University and Miyagi University of Education, the 46 students participated in English language classes, immersive cultural activities with CQUniversity student ambassadors, and experienced Australian hospitality through their homestay accommodation.
CQUniversity Partnerships and Mobility Coordinator Dominic de Moura McCarthy said the study tours provided a prime learning environment for both students and staff, with the universities’ longstanding partnership continuing to foster ongoing relationships.
“Study tours such as these provide a great opportunity for both parties to really learn from one another,” Mr de Moura McCarthy said.
“It’s important to foster intercultural connections that not only enable enhanced learning but also create lasting memories and lifelong relationships.”
Dr Ryu Yokoyama and students from Meikai University toured the city of Brisbane, and said they chose CQUniversity because of its strong academic programs and welcoming environment, which provided an ideal setting for learning.
“This study tour was a valuable opportunity for our Meikai students to develop their language skills, gain international experience, and broaden their perspectives,” Dr Yokoyama said.
“Brisbane’s vibrant and multicultural atmosphere makes it a great place for students to immerse themselves in English and experience Australian culture firsthand.”
Miyagi University students visiting Cairns were afforded the opportunity to experience the vibrant natural landscape of the tropical Far North. Professor Tom Ichinose, who accompanied the group, said students were privileged to have access to such rich, natural resources to learn from.
“CQUniversity Cairns campus is privileged to have abundant educational resources, including natural environments such as Green Island and rainforests, as well as art galleries and museums,” Professor Ichinose said.
“Additionally, as our students are enrolled in teacher training programs, the opportunity to observe and engage in educational activities at an elementary, junior high, and high school for a day was a valuable learning experience. Furthermore, their homestay experiences and interactions with CQU students allowed them to appreciate the warmth of the people of Australia and Cairns, leaving a lasting impression on them.”
Miyagi University of Education is a long-term CQUGlobal partner, offering their students the opportunity to study abroad, learn more about the Australian educational system and partake in cultural exchange programs. Meikai University has also had a long-standing partnership with CQU, with programs focusing on students’ developing skills in international relations and English language.
“Our study tours are becoming an increasingly popular option for groups looking for a short-term immersive experience in Brisbane and Cairns,” Mr de Moura McCarthy said.
“We tailor each program to suit the needs of the visiting university and provide a once in a lifetime tour.”
