Sense of purpose leads Diploma of Nursing graduate Tylah to Proserpine
By Greg Chapman
Like many in healthcare, CQUniversity Diploma of Nursing graduate Tylah Powell feels having the opportunity to help others gives her a sense of purpose.
The 22-year-old, who recently accepted a position at Proserpine Hospital, has encouraged others to consider studying to become an Enrolled Nurse and fulfil their own passions.
“For as long as I can remember, becoming a nurse has always been a goal of mine. I’ve always been passionate about health, teamwork and helping others, and saw nursing as a rewarding and respected career that I wanted to be a part of,” Tylah said.
“The opportunity for continuous learning and the variety of different nursing areas that you can expand into strongly appealed to me, as I enjoy a challenge and learning.
“What motivated me to begin my nursing studies was discovering the Diploma of Nursing course at CQU. This course reignited my passion for nursing as it was another pathway to nursing that was highly praised by previous students for its shorter duration, affordability, its exceptional support system and high success rates of students securing employment after graduation.”
Tylah completed her Diploma of Nursing at CQU Townsville in December last year, and she said the training she completed, mostly online, was second-to-none.
“I was very impressed and satisfied with the training I received from this course, especially considering I did it online,” she said.
“The units were set out well and allowed me to obtain information and successfully complete assessments by easily reading through modules and attending the online classes.”
One major aspect of the course was attending residential schools, where she put her acquired skills and knowledge to the test.
“When attending residential classes at the Townsville campus, my teachers helped me learn practical skills and were always very supportive, ensuring I received the answers to all my questions and encouraging us students to learn the correct and safe way of to use our nursing skills and follow Queensland Health standards,” she said.
“The residential classes always reassured me that I was on track when it came to assessments and clinical nursing skills.
“I also completed three work placements that were held in aged care, a health clinic and within a hospital setting. All my placements without doubt helped me to get my clinical skills signed off. On my last placement, I was encouraged by the hospital to apply for a job once I received my Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration and this is the job I now have.”
Having secured employment, Tylah said she hoped to study a Bachelor of Nursing at CQU to become a Registered Nurse in the future.
“I love being a nurse as the job is not just satisfying and rewarding, but it provides me with a deep sense of purpose, allowing me to fulfil my passion in helping others,” she said.
“I find it incredibly meaningful that I am making a difference to individuals lives everyday through my job, always supporting and advocating for my patients' needs and knowing that when I go home that I’ve been a part of their journey emotionally, physically and mentally.
“I highly recommend the Diploma of Nursing at CQU because of its clear and easy-to-follow structure, which made learning straightforward and manageable and not overwhelming.
“The support from both staff and teachers is exceptional, I never once felt like I couldn’t access the help that I needed and was always encouraged and guided through emails, phone calls and/or online classes. I also appreciated the program’s shorter duration, which allows students to learn the scope of practice quicker and enter the workforce without the long years of study and high costs.”
