Young performers razzle dazzle at CQCM
CQUniversity’s Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) Summer School production of Chicago – Teen Edition has left participants and audiences singing its praises.
The annual event brought together 42 enthusiastic performers, aged 12 to 18, for an intensive five-day program culminating in a fully staged musical production.
The participants had the opportunity to audition for lead roles or contribute to the ensemble.
CQCM Director Professor Judith Brown AM said the engaging program facilitates young talent and builds their confidence and teamwork skills - both on and off the stage.
“The Summer School is a fantastic opportunity for these young people to experience the live theatre,” Prof Brown said.
“It is exhausting, but they’re doing what they love, surrounded by like-minded students. Watching their growth and excitement is incredibly rewarding.”
In addition to the young performers, six full-time CQU Bachelor of Theatre students joined the program, gaining hands-on experience in costumes, props, sets, stage management, lighting, and assisting with directing, music directing, and choreography.
The work-integrated learning environment allowed the students to hone their professional skills while collaborating with a team of industry experts.
The 2025 production was led by guest director Maureen Bowra, with CQU associate lecturer Nicole Thomson as musical director, and Prof Brown as producer.
“Everyone had to work together seamlessly to bring a full show to the stage in just five days. It’s amazing to witness what they can achieve in such a short time,” Prof Brown said.
“The final performance was a testament to the dedication and teamwork of everyone involved.”
