Thank a First Responder Day

By Isis Symes

Emergency service workers from across the region were acknowledged for their continued contribution to society at a special ‘Thank a First Responder’ event on the CQUniversity Townsville campus today.

Hosted in collaboration with Fortem Australia – the nation’s leading support organisation for first responders and their families – the event thanked current, past and future first responders for their service.

Representatives from the Queensland Police Service, Queensland Ambulance Service, Queensland Fire and Emergency Service and the SES attended the national day of action.

Messages of thank you and support for first responders

“First responders show unwavering commitment, especially during crises and natural disasters, and despite their extraordinary duties, they are ordinary people with families and personal commitments,” Fortem Director of Strategic Communication James Maskey said.

“Their demanding roles often come at a personal cost, with many deeply affected by their work and the challenging environments they face. Nevertheless, they continue to answer the call, embodying the true spirit of great Australians,” he said.

“Townsville has faced its share of challenges, including critical incidents and escalating disasters. Yet, our first responders stand tall, risking their lives to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our communities.

“Amidst their selflessness and bravery, we must not overlook the fact that they are humans who may require assistance to continue their vital work."

Future first responders - CQUniversity Bachelor of Paramedic students - attended the activity and Paramedic Science Lecturer Ian de Jonge said it was a great way for them to connect with current paramedics.
