Ian McPhee AO PSM was appointed as the fourteenth Auditor-General for Australia, a position he held for the maximum ten-year term from 2005 – 2015. Since then, Ian has taken on a range of roles including as a Council member of CQUniversity, company director, chair/member of various audit committees, ACT Public Sector Standards Commissioner (part-time), distinguished Honorary Professor at the Australian National University, and is a member of the International Ethics Standards Board for Professional Accountants.

Ian received many awards in his distinguished career, most notably the Public Service Medal (2002), a Bingtang Jasa Utama (First Class Medal of Honour) awarded by the Republic of Indonesia (2010), an Honorary Doctor of the University by CQUni in 2013, and in 2015, he was made an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to public administration, principally in the areas of accountability and policy development. In 2026, he was also recognised by the Australian Accounting Hall of Fame.

Additionally, Ian is a Fellow and Life Member of CPA Australia, and a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, and the Institute of Public Administration.

Ian completed his degree on the Rockhampton campus, and is one of the early graduates of the Capricornia Institute of Advanced Education, as CQUniversity was known at the time.
