Upamali currently works as a Lecturer at the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. She chose CQUniversity for its high calibre human resources and high-tech facilities. Upamali says her PhD degree helped her develop the necessary experience and knowledge for her to teach university students.

Upamali's career achievements include winning the 2017 OPAL Award by CQUni for her socially engaged research project - Sustainable management of root-knot nematodes in vegetable crops - case studies with sweet potatoes and ginger". In 2018 she was awarded the 'Young Minds Award' as the best presenter at International Horticultural Congress. Upamali believes in the importance of mentoring and was a higher degree by research student mentor during her studies in 2018, 2019 as well as an international student ambassador for research students.
