My time at CQU gave me a strong foundation for studying medicine, particularly through the way the course provided a broad and holistic understanding of health.

I enjoyed the practical elements of my studies, especially laboratory work, which helped me better understand the processes behind tests that may be ordered in future clinical practice. Subjects such as relational anatomy and imaging also helped prepare me for the style and expectations of medical study. Living away from home during this time also helped me build independence, which has been important as I continue my studies.

My interest in medicine grew from a desire to challenge myself and help people. After high school, I was drawn to opportunities that gave me insight into clinical skills and the role doctors can play in supporting people to make better health decisions.

Studying medicine has been both rewarding and challenging. The study load can be demanding, and it requires balancing time with family, friends, interests and everyday responsibilities. At the same time, I have found the practical learning incredibly rewarding, particularly developing skills such as history taking and cannulation.

Volunteering at soup kitchens is also an important part of who I am. It reflects my desire to care for others and helps me maintain balance while studying. I believe that while doctors may not know everything, compassion and empathy for a patient’s needs are highly valued.

At this stage, I am still exploring where medicine may take me. I am interested in areas such as surgery, general health and rural generalism, and I am also considering how information technology could complement my future career.
