Tim Griffin

Born and raised in Rockhampton, I attended North Rockhampton State High School before choosing CQUniversity for its stellar reputation for hands-on, practical heavy engineering. Studying at CQU provided the ultimate foundation for my career; both my undergraduate Civil Engineering degree and Master of Business Administration (MBA) equipped me with the practical tools and strategic mindset needed to excel nationally and internationally.

My journey in rail transportation engineering began in 1984, leading to my graduation as a Civil Engineer in 1991. I subsequently spent decades in heavy haul logistics with Queensland Rail and Aurizon Network, living and working across Mackay, Rockhampton, Brisbane, and Cardiff, Wales. Over my career in the Department of Transport and Aurizon, I led teams of over 100 multi-skilled staff, managed $48 million annual operational budgets, and delivered $300 million in capital asset renewals.

In 2024, I accepted a Professional Fellowship with the Centre for Railway Engineering (CRE) hosted by CQUniversity in my hometown of Rockhampton, collaborating with researchers to advance Australia's rail transportation industry. Key highlights of my four-decade career include receiving the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2007, earning a Chartered Fellowship with CILT(UK) in 2008, and being named CQUniversity Alumnus of the Year in 2021. Today, I remain dedicated to sharing my strategic knowledge to mentor future engineers and drive industry innovation.
