Tan Alphonsus

Before joining CQUniversity, I built a long career in the Singapore Civil Service. I worked in administrative, purchasing, accounting and marketing support roles within a statutory board from 2001 to 2008, and also served with the Ministry of Home Affairs as a Law Enforcement Officer for 22 years.

My education journey was not always straightforward. After failing my senior school certificate, I was determined to prove to myself that I could still succeed. While working full-time, I studied at night and completed 10 diplomas throughout my career.

I later chose to study a Master of Business Administration with CQU. Completing the MBA in my 50s was a very meaningful personal achievement. I was proud to achieve four distinction grades during my studies, and I remain grateful to CQU for giving me the opportunity to prove to myself that age does not need to be a barrier to learning or success.

Since retiring from the workforce in 2013, my focus has shifted from employment to service. Although I could have continued working, I chose to give my time to volunteering instead.

Today, I am involved in volunteer work, including supporting education through coaching Primary One students in Maths. This work allows me to continue contributing to my community and supporting young learners.

My CQU journey was not only about career advancement. It was also about confidence, perseverance and lifelong learning. Completing my MBA showed me that it is never too late to keep learning, challenge yourself and contribute in meaningful ways.
