Niraj Thapa Magar

Before joining CQUniversity, I worked as an engineer in Nepal, particularly in the telecommunications sector in Far Western Nepal. After more than two years in the field, I realised that engineering was not the career path I wanted to continue pursuing long term. I was still exploring what truly aligned with my interests and decided to study overseas as a way to broaden my perspective and discover a clearer direction.

A friend who had studied at CQU recommended the University, and I chose to pursue further study there. I was looking for a program that would help me build management skills and open new career possibilities beyond engineering.

My time at CQU helped me discover my interest in education, student engagement and social innovation. While studying at the Sydney campus, I participated in various workshops and events, and the area of social innovation particularly inspired me to think about how I could contribute back to society.

After graduation, I returned to Nepal and joined Prime College as Coordinator of the Mathema Learning Resource Centre. In this role, I supported students to develop real-life skills they could apply to their studies, careers and communities.

I now work as Director of Student Life and Engagement at Prime College. My role focuses on helping students build skills beyond the classroom through workshops, activities, bootcamps and training. I design yearly engagement plans aligned with academic courses and mentor student clubs to help students identify their passions and interests.

One of my proudest achievements has been helping build a stronger culture of student engagement at Prime College. Students are now initiating new events, activities and ideas, and making them happen on campus. It is rewarding to see students take ownership of campus life and develop confidence beyond their academic studies.

My vision is to activate and support changemakers by creating participatory and active learning environments. I am also passionate about supporting rural and marginalised communities in Nepal, particularly through education and awareness, and I hope to continue creating opportunities that help students build confidence, purpose and practical skills beyond the classroom.
