Kellie Wellard

I have been a secondary teacher with Education Queensland since 2011 and now work as an Experienced Senior Secondary Teacher, with a focus on Year 10 Essential English coordination and specialist teaching.

My role involves supporting students through curriculum development, networking, learning walls and the creation of individual learning experiences. I work with students with diagnosed and non-diagnosed learning difficulties, modifying curriculum and advocating for students so they can work towards their personal learning goals.

Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a swimming coach, teacher aide and disability case manager. After six years as a teacher aide, I decided to pursue teaching formally. As a single mother of five children, I needed a flexible study option that would allow me to balance university, work and family. CQUniversity's online study options and proximity to home made it the right choice for me.

Since graduating, I have built a career focused on inclusive education, diverse learning and student wellbeing. I enjoy creating learning opportunities that help students feel supported, capable and included.

One of my career highlights has been progressing to Experienced Senior Teacher. I have also completed qualifications in Youth Mental Health First Aid, reflecting my ongoing commitment to student wellbeing, youth mental health and inclusive education.

I am passionate about supporting diverse learners and advocating for inclusion within school communities. I am currently a Rainbow Liaison Officer for my school, a member of the True Colours Network steering committee and a Be You advocate, supporting staff and students to build a more inclusive and mentally healthy school community.

My journey from teacher aide to experienced senior teacher has shown me the value of flexible education, persistence and creating learning environments where all students can succeed.
