Oral health education, preventive care and student mentoring

Oral health therapist

Before studying with CQUniversity, I was already working in the dental industry after completing a Certificate III in Dental Assisting. Working chairside with dentists and seeing the impact oral health has on a person’s overall wellbeing inspired me to pursue a more advanced career where I could provide treatment, education and preventive care directly to patients.

I completed CQU’s STEPS program, which gave me the confidence and academic foundation to undertake university study. From there, I completed the Bachelor of Oral Health and qualified as an Oral Health Therapist. Being able to complete this pathway locally made a significant difference, allowing me to remain connected to my family and community while building a career in the region I call home.

I chose CQU because it offered a clear pathway into the oral health profession, with a strong focus on practical, real-world learning. The opportunity to gain hands-on clinical experience while studying helped me develop the confidence and skills needed to work directly with patients.

I now work as an Oral Health Therapist in private practice, providing preventive, restorative and periodontal care for patients across a range of ages and needs. My role includes oral examinations, treatment planning, fluoride applications, fissure sealants, restorations, periodontal therapy and oral health education.

A significant part of my work also involves community outreach. I regularly visit schools to educate children about oral hygiene, healthy eating and the importance of preventive dental care. During these visits, I help provide students with toothbrushes and toothpaste, giving them practical resources to support good oral health habits at home.

One of the career achievements I am most proud of is mentoring CQU Oral Health Therapy students during their clinical placements. Recently, I had the opportunity to support second-year Bachelor of Oral Health students during a school-based oral health education session, which was a full-circle moment for me. It is incredibly rewarding to encourage students, share my experience and help build their confidence as future oral health professionals.

My degree has allowed me to combine my interests in patient care, preventive health, community education and mentoring. I am proud to contribute both within the clinic and in the broader community, while helping improve oral health outcomes for children, families and future oral health professionals in Central Queensland.
