Shelly Coombs

My career in accounting began in a public practice firm, where I started in an administrative role with no prior experience in the financial services sector. Through a strong commitment to learning and professional development, I quickly developed an understanding of taxation principles, business structures and the operational requirements of a public practice accounting firm.

My ability to learn and apply new knowledge was recognised by the firm’s Director, who encouraged me to pursue a university qualification and believed I had the aptitude to become an Accountant. To achieve this while maintaining full-time employment, I enrolled in the Bachelor of Accounting at CQUniversity. CQU’s flexible distance education program allowed me to balance my professional responsibilities with after-hours study, while continuing to gain valuable practical experience.

Since graduating, my career has progressed from administrative and practice management roles into my current role as an Accountant with Strategic 360 Pty Ltd. I now prepare income tax returns, financial statements, Business Activity Statements and other compliance reports for a diverse range of clients, including sole traders, partnerships, companies, trusts and self-managed superannuation funds. While my main focus is accounting and taxation, I also continue to provide guidance and support to the administrative team, drawing on my broader experience in practice operations.

Completing my degree gave me the theoretical foundation, technical skills and confidence to transition into accounting. I have since completed the Diploma of Chartered Accounting and attained the designation of Chartered Accountant.

I am particularly proud to have graduated with Distinction and achieved these professional milestones while working full-time and raising two young daughters. I am passionate about supporting Australian small businesses and contributing to my local community, including through my role as a Justice of the Peace (Qualified). I have also supported my local car club as Treasurer and later Webmaster, applying my financial, organisational and technical skills in a community-focused environment.
