Mick retired from the Qld Ambulance Service in 2013 after nearly 50 years-service in operational and executive management roles. On retirement, he was appointed Volunteer Executive Manager Qld Ambulance Heritage & History.
Mick started his work life as an apprentice Fitter in 1960 and became a member of the Qld Railway Ambulance Corps upon starting his work life. In 1964, he began as an Honorary Officer in Rockhampton’s Qld Ambulance Transport Brigade, and was then appointed to the permanent staff in 1969.
Mick’s roles within the Ambulance Service include operational ambulance officer, Regional Training Officer, Senior Administration Officer, Director of Staff Development, District Superintendent Bundaberg and then greater Brisbane South, Assistant Commissioner and Director Community Services.
In additional to operational roles, he has made a significant contribution through volunteering, including as President of the QAS Retired Officers’ Association since 2015 and Branch President and Director of the Australasian College of Health Service Managers (ACHSM) from 2013-2017. In 2024 he achieved the milestone of 60 years’ service with the Qld Ambulance Service.
In recognition of his decades of service, Mick has been recognised with the following awards and honours: Member (AM) of the Order of Australia; Ambulance Service Medal (ASM); The Surgeon-General John White Medal for Services to Health; and the Centenary Medal for services to Qld Ambulance History.
Through his QAS connections, Mick has been instrumental in assisting with arranging scholarships and learning opportunities for Paramedic Sciences students, and has been a member of the CQU Brisbane Engagement Committee since 2018.
In recognition of his significant career and services to CQUniversity, Mick was awarded the honorary status of “Doctor of the University” of Central Queensland University in 2016.
