Conservatorium students chime in for Bells are Ringing production

CQUni Bachelor of Theatre student Emma Goding tries on her costume for her lead role as 'Ella Peterson' in the comedy musical 'Bells Are Ringing'.

The popular 'rom-com' Broadway musical Bells Are Ringing is the next major production coming to the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM), based at CQUniversity Mackay Ooralea campus.

Set in the fabulous 1950s, the switchboard call centre, Susanswerphone (Sues-answer-phone), is deceived into establishing a bookie ring.

The production follows lead character Ella Peterson, the bubbly-yet-naive call centre operator, on her journey to find herself as well as true love.

Bells Are Ringing features the iconic choreography of Bob Fosse, famous for Sweet Charity and Pajama Game, and is full of songs by Jule Styne, the writer of the famous musical Gypsy.

This show is suitable for all ages, and is directed by Dale Pengelly, a professional Australian director/choreographer whose credits include Tap Dogs, The Boy from Oz, Singing in the Rain, Guys and Dolls, and the Lounge Suite.

Dale says he's "excited to share with the Mackay community this hilarious, emotional rollercoaster performance".

Lead actress Emma Goding, who plays Ella, has been enjoying trying on the fabulous 1950s-inspired costumes to get into character.

"What I love about Bells Are Ringing is the absolute honesty and humorous nature of it," Emma says.

"The process of discovering the show with our amazing director, Dale Pengally, is an exciting and energetic experience and I can't wait to see how the show develops further.

"I'm honoured to be part of this fun-loving production!”

Tickets for productions from 20 to 23 June can be booked via the CQCM website.
