A higher degree by research is usually required for an academic career or a professional career in research. Many other discipline-specific employment opportunities exist as employers recognise the skills developed through a degree by research course are widely applicable in the workplace.
The Masters Degree by Research is a course of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis. The course is governed by the Course Rules for Masters Degrees by Research which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the University will assist you to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

Structure and assessment
To complete the course, a candidate will normally study for an expected period of two years (full-time) or four years (part-time). New applicants may apply at any time of the year. Continuing candidates will be re-enrolled at the beginning of each academic year. The research units in which masters candidates enrol are ungraded. Candidates who may be required to complete prescribed units will be enrolled in a separate course (CP20).

Credit transfer information
If you have already completed study relevant to the course you have enrolled in, you may be eligible for credit transfer.
To successfully complete your studies, you may be required to demonstrate that you can meet course requirements associated with your course. For more information on these course requirements please view the ‘Course Requirements’ section found under the ‘What do I need to start?’ page under the ‘Getting Started’ tab of the Student Handbook . You may be considered for admission to candidature for the masters degree if you:
» hold an honours degree from the university or any other approved institution in a relevant discipline; or
» hold a three year undergraduate degree and a graduate diploma at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline; or
» hold a three year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline, plus a minimum of one year's relevant work experience; or
» hold a three year undergraduate degree with a credit level grade point average (GPA); or
» hold a four year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance; or
» holds an alternative qualification deemed by the panel to be of equivalent scope and standard.
Persons holding only a pass degree, and who do not satisfy any of those criteria specified above, will be required to undertake a masters qualifying/enabling course, normally of only one year (full-time) duration, as specified in the university's resolution on masters qualifying courses.
Fees and scholarships
Degree-level students should check their Offer Letter to confirm the type of place they have been offered as this determines which fees apply to their enrolment. Students offered
- Commonwealth supported places are liable to pay Student Contributions;
- domestic full-fee places are liable to pay Tuition Fees;
- international full-fee places are liable to pay International Tuition Fees.
In addition to these fees, degree-level students pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee. NOTE: Some students who are exempt from paying Student Contributions and Tuition Fees, e.g. Research Higher Degree candidates, will be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee.
Fees are calculated upon enrolment, and recalculated after any enrolment change made prior to census date. Fees are also recalculated after administrative changes or updates are made to a student record, e.g. changes to citizenship status or Fee Liability Category.
Once calculated, fees can be viewed by logging into MyCentre, which also allows students to view and print Fee Notices on demand. The due date for payment is detailed on the Fee Notice.
PLEASE NOTE that paper Fee Notices are not issued by CQUniversity – students must access their Fee Notices in MyCentre.

Unlike coursework study, a Research Higher Degree typically does not follow a structure of lectures, tutorials, assessment items and examinations. A research higher degree is a program of supervised research and study leading to the preparation and submission of a thesis.

Frequently Asked Questions
Research Higher Degree applications may be submitted at any time of the year. The commencement date for candidature will be negotiated between the candidate and the University, and may be reliant on resources or supervisor availability.
The Research Higher Degree online application process begins with an Expression of Interest which asks you to select your course, campus/study mode and provide a brief description of your proposed research topic.
Following receipt of your EOI your application will be assessed for availability of supervision. A proposed supervisor may contact you via email to discuss your proposed topic, assist you to develop a research proposal, and determine availability of resources and alignment with the University’s research priority areas.
You may then be invited to submit a full application for admission. The University reserves the right to refuse admission to any applicant
Depending on the outcome of your application, you may be made an offer to study at CQUniversity. You will be advised on the outcome of your application admission via email, generally within fourteen days from receipt of your full application. If you choose to accept your offer you must commence your candidature within six months from the Offer date.
An applicant who does not meet the Entry Requirements for a Research Higher Degree may be offered a place in a lower level research higher degree and/or required to complete prescribed units prior to or concurrent with admission to the course.
International applicants or domestic applicants with educational qualifications from an institution that does not instruct in English may be required to present evidence of English language proficiency, prior to admission being granted.
