Whether you have always dreamed of being a teacher, or you are now seeking a career change, the Master of Teaching (Primary) is an initial teacher education course suitable if you already hold a non-education three-year bachelor degree and wish to become a primary school teacher.
The Master of Teaching (Primary) is an ideal course if you have completed a three year non-education bachelor degree and wish to move into a career as a primary school teacher. Upon graduating, you will be eligible to teach Prep - Year 6 in Australian primary schools.
This course enables you to teach across the Australian Curriculum - within Accreditation requirements, the required Australian Curriculum to be covered includes:
- Science
- English
- Mathematics
- Humanities and Social Sciences (Including Geography: Foundation - Year 6, History: Foundation - Year 6, Civics and Citizenship: Year 3 - Year 6, and Business and Economics: Year 5 - Year 6)
- Technologies
- The Arts
- Health and Physical Education
In addition to building the professional knowledge and skills required to teach, the course is designed to foster dispositions for engaging in and contributing to the teaching profession through a commitment to ongoing professional learning.
The design of this course utilises CQUniversity's three-term structure, therefore a two-year volume of learning masters course can be fast-tracked to be completed in one and a half years. A part-time pathway is also available and is to be completed as per the part-time course planner.
This course can only be studied within Australia, however, you must be in a location where you can access, or travel to, up to two school sites for the in-school practicum within the course.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) is an initial postgraduate pre-service teacher education program for those who aim to pursue a career as a primary school teacher. Graduates are qualified to teach from Year 1 to 6.
Graduates of the program can apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers and are qualified to teach in State, Catholic and Independent schools throughout Australia.
The program is also recognised as a teaching qualification for employment in educational settings internationally, however additional requirements may apply in some locations.
Graduates of this program have developed significant skills that enhance employment opportunities in other sectors. In combination with work experience and personal qualities, graduates may pursue employment in a variety of career paths including:
- government departments (e.g. family services, education and health)
- education administration
- community development roles
- workplace training developers
Structure & Availability
Course structure
You are required to complete a total of 16 core units.
Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) course are expected to undertake and meet the benchmark in the personal Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE). These two tests (one literacy and one numeracy) are part of the accreditation requirements of this course and there is an expectation that students enrolled in an ITE course will be undertaking the tests and successfully meet the benchmarks prior to graduation. Term 2 commencement

Indicative First-Year Fee
The Indicative First-Year Fee is the approximate cost of enrolling in this course for one full-time academic year (eight units over two terms) depending on the type of place you are offered, for example, a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) or Full Fee Paying (FFP) Place. Your actual fees may vary, depending on the units you select to study and your study load. Fees are reviewed each year and are subject to change.
Commonwealth Supported Places
With Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) available for this course in 2024, you may be eligible for significant fee savings, provided you meet CSP eligibility requirements. CSPs are subsidised by the Australian Government, meaning you are only required to pay the student contribution rather than full tuition fees.
If you are not eligible for a CSP or if CSPs are full, you will be required to pay full fees.
HECS-HELP Loan
You may be eligible for a HECS-HELP government loan if you are offered a CSP. HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme that assists you in paying your student contributions.
