Eligibility Criteria

An eligible applicant will:

a) have complete a Bachelor degree with Hons I or IIA, or be regarded by CQUniversity as having an equivalent level of attainment, preferably in the area of Engineering or Mathematics;

b) apply for, and be approved for, and enrolling in a Doctor of Philosophy at CQUniversity;

c) enrol full-time, and be an internal on-campus candidate at CQUniversity's Brisbane campus.

Applicants must not have previously held a Commonwealth-funded or CQUniversity-funded postgraduate research scholarship, unless it was terminated within the first six months of the scholarship payments commencing; and, applicants must not be receiving an equivalent scholarship, award or salary providing a benefit of greater than 75% of the value of this Scholarship to undertake a research higher degree.

The succesful applicant must be able to commence their candidature as soon as possible in 2017.

Selection Criteria

A merit-based selection process will apply.

Applicants are invited from candidate's who meet the eligibility criteria for entry to PhD, and have a background in engineering or mathematics.

The candidate will be required to publish papers related to their thesis during the period of candidature.

Additional Information

Optimised ensemble classifiers are essential tools for many real-world applications such as document analysis, robotics and medical diagnosis so this project has huge impact on Australian economy and daily lives. The proposed framework will expand knowledge base and research capability in ensemble optimisation. The outcome will be new methods for ensemble classifiers that will improve efficiency and accuracy of classification systems.

The project aims to develop a novel framework for creating an optimised ensemble classifier that will improve the accuracy of many real-world applications. Novel methods for generating diverse training environment layer, base classifiers and fusion of classifiers will be developed and investigated. A multi-objective evolutionary algorithm-based search will be designed to obtain the optimal number of layers, clusters and base classifiers. The impact of the proposed framework will be advances in classifier learning. The final outcome will be novel methods which will bring in diversity during the learning of the base classifiers and provide an optimal ensemble classifier for real world applications.

The successful PhD candidate will be based at CQUniversity’s Brisbane campus with Professor Brijesh Verma, and will be engaged in research investigating Tasks within the Discovery Project Research Plan.

The candidate will be required to study full-time and on campus due to the nature of the work.
