Agriventis PhD Scholarship

Australia has the climatic diversity suitable for a broad range of grain legume and pulse production. Expansion of grain legumes, however, can create a significant pressure on agricultural water. Developing water use efficient crop varieties and packages of practice for rainfed cropping particularly for northern Australian farming systems will be a focus of this project. A project will be developed to explore the mechanisms for drought tolerance and improved water use efficiency under field conditions for soybean, chickpea and mungbean crops. The student will be based at the CQUniversity’s North Rockhampton campus, with periods of fieldwork in rural locations, and may be required to spend periods in other states of Australia. The candidate may be provided with opportunities to undertake placement activities with the sponsor during the course of the candidature.

Scholarship Value: The Scholarship will provide a living allowance stipend of $30,000 per year (fixed value), for up to three years. One Scholarship is available. Full time scholars will be eligible to receive the scholarship tax-free. The stipend will be paid in fortnightly instalments through the University’s payroll system.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this Scholarship the candidate must be a domestic student or an international student, approved for admission and enrolling in a Doctor of Philosophy at CQUniversity. Prospective applicants should consult the Research Higher Degrees Course Rules Policy and Procedure for further information about eligibility requirements for admission to CQUniversity.

The candidate must be a full-time on-campus student at CQUniversity’s Rockhampton North Campus.

The candidate must not be receiving income from another source to support general living costs while undertaking the course of study if that income is greater than 75 per cent of the Scholarship stipend rate. Income unrelated to the course of study or income received for the course of study by not for the purposes of supporting general living costs is not to be taken into account.

Selection Criteria

The Scholarship will be awarded by the University through a competitive selection process. Individual applications will be ranked on the basis of merit and responses to the Selection Criteria.

Applicants should have a previous degree (Master degree) in a field such as science, agriculture, biology or relevant work experience in these subjects.

Applications are invited from candidates who are able to provide evidence of -

  • Significant coursework or research in botany, agriculture, crop and water science required
  • Candidates who have some knowledge and experience with applied statistics and organic chemistry are preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Track record of publication

The successful applicant will be required to publish scientific and peer-reviewed papers in relation to their thesis during the period of candidature.

Specific Provisions

An extension is not available to the duration of this award.

The candidate must be enrolled as a full-time, on-campus candidate.

The successful candidate must be prepared to commence their candidature by 01 July 2018.

The Scholarship will be terminated if the candidate makes a substantive change to the thesis topic, research plan or supervisory panel to the extent that the research higher degree project no longer meets the Project Description described in these Terms and Conditions.

The Research Environment

The candidate will be supervised by experienced researchers from the University’s Institute for Future Farming Systems (https://www.cqu.edu.au/research/organisations/institute-for-future-farming-systems). IFFS researchers’ expertise in agricultural science include a multidisciplinary research team, supported by external funding from national competitive grant schemes, Government, and collaborative industry funding. The Institute’s research has strong links to regional industries, and includes research activity in precision agriculture, water and irrigation systems, natural resource management, value chain management and resource economics. The Institute’s engaged research agenda aims to develop long-term research partnerships, with a focus on delivering both academic and industry impact. IFFS researchers have access to well-equipped crop science and allied laboratory facilities and dedicated plant growth facilities (controlled environment growth chambers, modern glasshouse, weather protected plant growing facilities and access to field plot to support crop eco-physiological research. Analytical laboratory support provides a range of milling facilities, atomic absorptions systems, carbon nitrogen analyser, HPLC, GC-MS, and range of MIR and NIR facilities. The IFFS provides a welcoming and supportive environment for postgraduate students, visiting researchers, and collaborators.
