The Graduate Certificate in Emergency and Health Services Management will provide you with contemporary knowledge and skills to enable health care managers to excel in Australia’s complex and dynamic health care environment.
This course examines contemporary management of people and organisations, including effective human resource management in an increasingly dynamic and global environment. You will examine the emotional intelligence model that will allow you to identify the key competencies required of managers to effectively work with and through others. In this course, you will explore local and global concepts of emergency and disaster management and the frameworks that underpin effective management of emergency events. Drawing on your experience, you will explore the concept of leadership, particularly how leadership styles impact an emergency and disaster management environment. Through the exploration of global health issues, you will explore the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as they relate to global public health and examine a range of public health issues including communicable disease, climate change, gender equity and food security, preparing you to take on lead roles in health care projects and interventions.
Designed to provide contextual learning opportunities, the course includes practical assessments and reflective practice. You will also benefit from a flexible course structure that can be studied online or on-campus, full-time or part-time, to suit you and your commitments.

To be eligible for entry into this course, applicants must hold one of the following:
- A completed Australian Bachelor degree, or higher Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) equivalent qualification; or
- A minimum of 5 years experience as a health leader or manager in a healthcare and emergency service setting.
Professional experience must be shown in a letter of employment which is presented on a company letterhead as well as signed and dated by a delegated authority. The letter must contain position title, duties performed and length of service.
English Language Proficiency Requirements:
If you were not born in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa or United States of America, you are required to meet the English Language Proficiency requirements set by the University.
Applicants are required to provide evidence of completion of:
- a secondary qualification (Year 11 or 12, or equivalent); or
- bachelor level qualification study for a period of at least 2 years full time with a minimum overall GPA 4.0
completed within Australia, Canada, New Zealand, United Kingdom, South Africa, Ireland or United States of America.
If you do not satisfy any of the above, you will need to undertake an English language proficiency test and achieve the following scores:
- An International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) overall band score of at least 6.0 with a minimum 5.5 in each subset; or
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Requires 550 or better overall and minimum TWE score of 4.5 (Paper Based Test), or 75 or better overall and no score less than 17 (Internet Based Test); or
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) - Requires an overall score of 54 with no sub-score less than 46; or
- An Occupational English Test with Grades A or B only in each of the four components.
English test results remain valid for no more than two years between final examination date and the date of commencement of study, and must appear on a single result certificate.
Each student will be assessed individually.
Successful graduates would be eligible for employment in managerial positions in hospitals (public, private and not-for-profit), the health services sector and community settings.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) are subsidised by the Australian Government, meaning you are only required to pay the student contribution rather than full tuition fees if you meet eligibility requirements.
