PhD Elevate Scholarship - CQUniversity and Surf Lifesaving Queensland Partnership (External)

Project title: Assessing prevalence of stinger incidents and effects of wearing stinger suits for lifesavers and lifeguards within Surf Life Saving Queensland. There is limited research within the area of surf lifesaving when assessing stinger suits for surf lifesavers (volunteers) and lifeguards (paid). This project will investigate marine stinger incidents that have been treated by Queensland surf lifesavers and lifeguards and the factors associated with effective treatments. Characteristics such as patients’ age, locations, lifesaver experience, and surf conditions will be analysed to provide an understanding of the environmental and personal factors associated with marine stingers. The proposed project will also examine the physiological effects (such as core body temperature, heart rate, thermal comfort) of different stinger suit material for patrolling members during normal patrol tasks, including during stinger drags. This project is jointly funded by Surf Life Saving Queensland, and CQUniversity.
