CQU-Mackay-Whitsunday Regional Partnership Scholarship

Make a Sea Change and Help Save the Great Barrier Reef! Live on one of the most idyllic locations on the planet while directly helping save the world’s greatest living organism. You get to live in and visit the quaint and exotic coastal villages and towns such as Yeppoon, Marlborough, Mackay and in between. Go bushwalking in the weekends and catch up with mates in the tranquil evenings by riverside and oceanfront bars. Your office will alternate between the modern analytical laboratories in Rockhampton and Mackay and the catchment of the Great Barrier Reef whose waterbodies drain into this wonderous and largest living organism on the planet! To help you realise this perfect work-play scenario, an opportunity has arisen for a scientist wishing to undertake their PhD in Rockhampton and Mackay. A very generous stipend that more than covers the cost of living on the east coast of Australia will help entice you to make the move to this almost-unexplored region of Queensland. Then, the scholarship also comes with several opportunities to travel for conferences within Australia and internationally accompanied by your mentors. You will have access to modern analytical laboratories both in Rockhampton and Mackay, and there will always be a supervisor at each site. You will be looking at developing rapid and sensitive in-field nitrogen monitoring sensors that will measure the species in real time and relay their concentrations to authorities and farmers. This will also help reduce nitrogen loadings into the waterways and ultimately into the ocean. This study represents a cutting-edge approach being implemented for the very first time in the world. You will be supervised by scientists from CQU Rockhampton and Mackay Regional Council, which is a Reef Guardian Council delivering environmentally sustainable practices in the Great Barrier Reef catchment. The scholarship is available for an immediate start and there is some assistance towards relocation costs to Mackay for the selected candidate.
