Overview

Let us help you get the right start to your career in the justice system. In addition to giving you solid skills in a range of legal areas, this course will give you a chance to pursue a rewarding career in a variety of fields, such as the police force, youth justice or border force. This course is included in the Australian and Queensland Government’s Fee Free TAFE program.

This course provides learners with the specialist skills and knowledge required to perform the following duties and functions:

  • Interpret and apply legislation to provide support and advice on justice related issues
  • Work effectively in the crime and justice sector and within the legal and regulatory frameworks
  • Prepare accurate documentation and communication using methods and protocols appropriate to the justice sector and the context
  • Identify and apply the principles of law enforcement and the principles of natural justice
  • Identify and explain social justice issues and the impact of these on crime and justice related matters
  • Conduct research from primary and secondary sources to gather the evidence and information necessary to complete justice related tasks

Career Opportunities

This qualification consists of competency in 6 core and 4 elective units. On successful completion of all 10 units, students will receive a Certificate IV in Justice Studies.

Career opportunities: Police Officer (State or Federal), Corrections Officer, Legal administration, Court Services Officer, Protective Services Officer, Australian Border Force Officer, Private Investigator, Local/State Government Investigator, Youth Justice Roles, and Government Administrator.

Pathways: Students who successfully complete 10971NAT Certificate IV in Justice Studies will be eligible for direct entry into 10972NAT Diploma of Justice Studies and CL75 Bachelor of Criminology at CQUniversity.

Standard Course Structure

Duration:

12 - 18 months

One (1) unit per 10 week study period

To ensure you can manage your study load, we recommend limiting your workload to no more than one (1) unit per study period.

 

Some students may progress at a faster rate based on their experience, knowledge, and skills, as they would be able to apply the actual context of workplace experience to their assessments.

Requirements

 

Completion of the bksb (Basic Key Skills Builder) online literacy and numeracy assessment prior to enrolment, unless the student has completed an equal or higher level course.

What is the purpose of bksb?

The bksb is an approved online review tool that will give the student a level for their English (literacy) and Maths (numeracy) levels, and can also help to identify any skill gaps or areas that the student might need additional support in.

 

It is beneficial for those seeking entry into Certificate IV of Justice Studies to satisfy at least one of the entry requirements provided below:

· successful completion of a Certificate III qualification, or

· completion of Year 10 or equivalent with a sound achievement in English, or

· relevant work or life experience in the business or justice fields.

Fee for Service/ Full Fee

Fee for Service/Full Fee occurs when the full tuition fee is charged to students. This may occur when the course is not included in government subsidy program/s or the student is not eligible for a government subsidy. These students are obligated to cover the entire cost. Co-Contribution and Co-Contribution Concessional Fee

Some government subsidies, such as Higher Level Skills (HLS), will require the individual to contribute to the cost of their training through a co-contribution fee. Government subsidies are subject to eligibility.

The fee will vary based on the course chosen and the eligibility of the student for a concession rate. The co-contribution fee represents the total cost to the student for tuition. There are other costs that the student may have to pay, including but not limited to uniforms and course resources. This will vary depending on the training. This course is part of the Queensland Government's TAFE Priority Skills Fund. Eligibility and conditions apply. Eligible students need to be enrolled and participate in study prior to the end of June 2024 to access TAFE Priority Skills Fund.
