About the Vice-President, Student Success

The Vice-President Student Success has overall responsibility for the end-to-end student journey at Central Queensland University. Professor Powles has direct responsibility for marketing and recruitment, admissions, equity and widening participation, student engagement and retention, and student administration. The recruitment, admission and support of international students is also part of the remit of the VP Student Success. The CQU Chief Wellbeing Officer and the counselling, wellbeing and safer communities functions also form part of the Student Success division. More broadly, Jonathan serves as the voice of the students on the university executive, and advocates for students in institutional, regional and national fora.

About Jonathan Powles

Professor Powles has had a thirty-year career in universities. He has held academic and executive positions in universities in Australia, Scotland and England. Originally a music academic, Professor Powles studied composition with Peter Sculthorpe and Ros Edwards at the University of Sydney, before completing his doctorate at the University of Oxford on the music of Stravinsky. His leadership roles have over the last two decades focused on learning and teaching, student success and wellbeing, equity and widening participation, online learning, and the particular challenges and opportunities afforded universities in regional areas. Jonathan is passionate about the role universities play in creating opportunities and transforming lives for students, their families, and our regions.
