Research

This PhD will involve ongoing program evaluation across three years of the Waybeah Friend Street Village with Roseberry Qld in Gladstone. The research will focus on four main areas: 1) A review of existing social and affordable housing initiatives, analyzing successes, challenges, and outcomes, with a systematic or scoping review and a focus on regional vs metropolitan issues. 2) Tenant and resident experiences through yearly participatory workshops, individual interviews, and photovoice to explore issues like homelessness, housing insecurity, and barriers to finding a home. 3) Staff experiences via participatory workshops and interviews to understand their roles, challenges, and sustainable workforce solutions. 4) Community attitudes through media content analysis and a community survey to gauge awareness and attitudes toward housing insecurity and Waybeah. Each focus area will contribute to multiple chapters, peer-reviewed publications, and ongoing evaluation of Waybeah.


  • Commitment to completing a full time PhD over a 3 year period
  • Strong interest in social research, particularly housing and homelessness
  • Experience or willingness to engage in participatory research methods (e.g. workshops, interviews)
  • Ability to collect and analyse qualitative data
  • Strong communication skills for reporting findings and contributing to publications
  • Abiltiy to work indpendatly and collaboratively within a research team

The candidate will be required to travel to Gladstone.
