The Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarship Program is a Federal Government Program administered by each University. The Indigenous Commonwealth Scholarships Program assists regional and remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly those from rural and regional areas, with costs associated with higher education. At CQUniversity, these scholarships are known as Dare to Be Deadly Scholarships (D2BD).   The D2BD Professional Registration Bursary assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students studying in enabling, undergraduate, honours, or postgraduate courses with professional registration costs required for employment in their professional field.

A D2BD Scholarship will be awarded on the basis that the applicant meets the Indigenous Student Assistance Grants Guidelines 2017. 

To be eligible for a D2BD Professional Registration Bursary, recipients must:

  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person and provide Confirmation of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Identity or Cultural Reference documents as detailed in the Supporting Documentation section.
  • Be eligible to graduate from a CQUniversity undergraduate course, associate degree, or postgraduate course in an area of National Priority required for initial registration to practice in the chosen National Priority.
  • Be entering into a professional field that requires registration/membership with a peak body professional association.

Selection Process

As there are a limited number of scholarships available, all scholarships may be exhausted prior to the advertised closing date.

Payment of Scholarship

Successful applicants are required to enter their current financial institution details (banking details) into their MyCQU account for payment to occur.

The Student Scholarships Team will reimburse graduating students for their professional registrations electronically to their nominated bank account.

Feedback

As a scholarship recipient, you may be asked to participate in a feedback survey. You may also be approached to assist with promoting the CQUniversity Scholarships program by sharing your experiences as a recipient through media or invited to attend events such as Orientation or Open Day.

Applications should include all necessary supporting documents. Incomplete applications cannot be considered. Applicants will need to supply the following supporting documentation:

  • Paid invoice/receipt from their professional registration body/association.
  • Confirmation of Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander Identity Documents: 
    • Provide a letter signed by the Chairperson with the seal and letterhead of an Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander organisation in the community in which the student lives or has previously lived; or
  • Cultural References documents:
    • Provide 2 x Cultural References and a Statutory Declaration
    • A Cultural Reference is defined as:
      • a recognised Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community member named or known as a spokesperson, a member, employee, or executive of a registered First Nations Australian organisation; or 
      • an acknowledged and recognised Elder or Traditional Owner who is a member of an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community.

To apply for a Dare to Be Deadly Professional Registration Bursary, please follow these steps:

  1. Contact the Student Scholarships Team by emailing studentscholarships@cqu.edu.au requesting an application form.
  2. Once the first eligibility checks are conducted, the Student Scholarships Team will send an application form to your student email.
  3. Return the completed form and relevant supporting documentation to studentscholarships@cqu.edu.au.

Please note bursaries may be exhausted prior to the advertised closing date.

Students will be notified of the outcome of their application via their student email accounts only. Decisions are final.
The Indigenous Student Success Scholarship Program (ISSP)

The Indigenous Student Success Scholarship Program (ISSP) is a Commonwealth-funded program to help students take on the demands of university and succeed. Dare to Be Deadly Scholarships are prioritised towards the support of Indigenous Students who are financially disadvantaged and/or from remote and regional areas.
