Hello my name is Dr Salman Khalesi Taharoom, I’m the discipline leading nutrition and senior lecturer in ambassador of Medical Science Nutrition. Well a nutritionist is a person who provides advice on issues and matters related to food and nutrition to improve the health and wellbeing of the property and so a nutritionist can work as a health professional, health promotional officer, public health officer, nutrition education and nutrition consultants, as well as research assistants and researchers and food technologies and food coordinators in industries if they wish.
Bachelor of Medical Science Nutrition is designed and developed in a way to meet the requirements of the industry as well as our professional society which is Nutrition Society of Australia.
Well the first year of Medical Science Nutrition is similar to the other disciplines in the Medical Science, the students will learn the foundations from chemistry to biochemistry and microbiology and anatomy and physiology. In the second year they start to learn more discipline specific content and learning materials. They learn anything related to nutrition from understanding the physiology and metabolism of food and nutrition in our body and to the role of food in our health and wellbeing and our requirements and different stages of live as well as nutrition assessments in individual and public health.
Towards the end of the degree students have a chance to complete a work placement in an industry or in a health organisation and also will be able to have training in research if the research is something that they are interested into, interested in developing further or as a career.
So all of these will prepare a student for the work environment but we have a residential schools for some units which are dedicated time where students need to attend those facilities and then those labs that I mentioned and, and gain that hands on experience and the practical experience that are required for the discipline training and make them ready for the job post graduation.
We all eat food, it is our basic need and it’s also our survival, our developing of growth and our health and wellbeing all depends on it. But to me what fascinates me is to understand the science behind this and to understand how our poor nutrition intake can lead to nutrition related conditioning disease and how our well balanced diet can improve our mental and physical health and understanding and learning nutrition have been helping students to understand these links and explore the connections further to help improve the health and wellbeing of themselves, their colleagues and their loved ones.
