First Nations researchers gain writing tips and tricks during retreat
CQUniversity's growing contingent of First Nations Research Higher Degree (RHD) students came together in Rockhampton – Darumbal Country – recently for the Jilbay RHD Academy Writing Retreat.
The retreat was an opportunity for the researchers to meet each other face to face and work on their research 'write-ups'' which included everything from thesis chapters' confirmation of candidature documents' proposals' journal articles and novels.
The students from Cairns (Gimuy Walubara Yidinji and Yirriganydji)' Townsville (Bindal and Wulgurukaba)' Mt Isa (Kalkadoon)' Rockhampton (Darumbal)' Agnes Water (Gurang)' Bundaberg (Gurang' Gooreng Gooreng' and Taribelang Bunda)' Brisbane (Turrbal' Jagera' Yuggera' and Ugarapul) and Sydney (Gadigal of the Eora Nation) were supported with academic writing and Indigenous research methods training and student-led training.
First Nations RHD Academy Coordinator Dr Lorraine Tulele said the retreat was a much-welcomed catch-up for all involved' as many developments had occurred in the last two years' with new students also joining the Academy.
"One of the biggest outcomes from the retreat was the decision by the students to develop a set of values reflective of what they stand for as a group of First Nations scholars'" Dr Tulele explained.
"The yarning circles and sessions led by students were also very empowering for students' whilst the overall feedback from the retreat was very positive."
Deputy Vice President Indigenous Engagement Professor Adrian Miller said "the Academy provides a safe space for students to engage with the tensions and complexities of cross-cultural research and to express their unique voice and ideas as First Nations scholars".
The Jilbay Research Higher Degree Academy is an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research-focused community of practice hosted within CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement (OIE) Jawun Research Centre. The Academy is jointly funded by the School of Graduate Research and the National Indigenous Australians Agency's Indigenous Student Success Program.
The Academy is the first internally funded academy of its kind for any Australian university and aims to build the research capacity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander RHD candidates and their supervisors' by developing and undertaking Indigenous research projects and establishing partnerships in collaboration with other CQUniversity Schools' Research Centres and Institutes.
