High school students get to taste tradie life
About 40 high school students got to try their hand at brick laying' basic construction' plumbing and electrical skills as part of Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ) and Worldskills Australia's Try'a Trade event' hosted by CQUniversity's Rockhampton City Campus this week.
The Rockhampton and Capricorn Coast students rotated through the campuses' training facilities to get a taste of what it's like to work as a tradie.
Under the guidance of CQUniversity TAFE teachers' the students were provided with opportunities to discover hidden talents and develop career passions.
CSQ Chief Executive Officer Brett Schimming said the Try'a Trade program aims to encourage high school students to consider a trade in the building and construction industry.
"There is a lot to think about when choosing a job path near the end of school' and it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the choice' or pressured into making the right choice'" Mr Schimming said.
"Try'a Trade gives students opportunities to consider a pathway into construction by trying various trades and possibly finding one that's just the right fit for them'" he said.
"The construction industry is a great place to build your career with so many options to earn while you learn and develop skills that can are highly valued and transportable."
CQUniversity Head of Course Construction Stewart Larsson said Try'a Trade was an important opportunity for school students to visit CQUniversity's quality training facilities and trial first-hand construction careers.
"We are pleased to work with CSQ and Worldskills for this great event and meet some of the region's up-and-coming tradies'" he said.
