CQU training saw Jessika return to complete her hairdressing apprenticeship

Jessika Klein has proven to be a cut above the rest, taking her hairdressing apprenticeship and turning it into a career with the help of CQUniversity’s training.
Based in Rockhampton, Jessika’s apprenticeship journey was a little back-and-forth, starting with CQU TAFE and two different employers, then moving to another training provider.
The change to her current employer, The Safari Room, and reuniting with CQU TAFE, finally delivered success.
“I started with CQU and had a great experience, but I had ended the position that I was in with a previous employer. I then joined another local salon which was through a different training provider. I loved the atmosphere and had gained great skills during this time,” Jessika said.
“I was looking for more and wanting to gain other opportunities to further my career, and in my last year, I commenced employment at The Safari Room.
“I realised the quality of support and education I was receiving at CQU TAFE Rockhampton was unmatched. The trainers genuinely care, and the hands-on learning was exactly what I needed to thrive, so I made the decision to come back – and it was the best decision I could’ve made.”
Jessika’s passion for hairdressing has taken her far. Recently, she had the opportunity to assist Sharon Blain at the Hair Expo in Sydney, and she was also a finalist in the Australian Hair Industry Awards (AHIA) Apprentice of the Year.
“I’ve always been drawn to creativity, beauty, and helping others feel their best. Hairdressing felt like the perfect blend of artistry and connection. I love that no two days are ever the same, and I get to make people feel confident and special through something as personal as their hair.
“The training at CQU was incredibly practical, supportive and industry-relevant. I left feeling confident and skilled. The trainers were knowledgeable, patient, and made a real effort to keep things modern and aligned with salon standards.
"It gave me not only the technical skills but also the professional confidence to step straight onto the salon floor.
“Now that I’ve completed my apprenticeship, I’m focused on refining my specialty in styling and creative work, particularly for events and fashion-forward looks. Long term, I’d love to be involved in editorial styling, fashion events, and continuing to build a personal brand within the industry.
“Hairdressing is so much more than cutting and colouring – it’s a career full of creativity, connection and growth.
"You get to meet amazing people, be constantly learning, and have a skill that can take you anywhere in the world.
"If you love making people feel good and have an eye for detail or a creative streak, it’s a career you’ll absolutely love."
Jessika said she's proud of how how far she's come, and grateful for the guidance from CQU and via in-salon training by Justin Hampson and Gemma Koster at The Safari Room.
“I’d encourage anyone thinking about this path to take the leap – it’s rewarding, empowering, and full of opportunity if you’re passionate and willing to put in the work.”
