CQUniversity’s Rex Metcalfe Lecture Theatre on the Gladstone campus will receive a much-needed facelift thanks to the support of Rio Tinto’s Here for Gladstone, on behalf of Yarwun Alumina, Boyne Smelter Limited (BSL) and Queensland Alumina Limited (QAL) operations.

Here for Gladstone will donate $76,000 to update this vital communal space to help foster better community engagement and collaboration.

The refurbishment is part of the joint Queensland and Commonwealth Government Hydrogen Community Information Centre project.

CQU Gladstone campus Associate Vice-President Luke Sinclair highlighted the theatre’s importance: “The Rex Metcalfe theatre has been a cornerstone for cultural events, educational programs and community gatherings for many years," he said.

“It serves as a vital space for connection and enrichment and this incredibly generous contribution from Rio Tinto will allow us to cover the cost of replacing seats that are 28 years old and update the technology to include an advanced lectern. This ensures the theatre remains a modern functional and inviting space for all users for many years to come.”

The refurbishment of the 165-seat Rex Metcalfe Theatre, which is used by more than 5,000 people each year, will transform it into a more modern, safe, inclusive and engaging environment.

The improvements are designed to foster community engagement and collaboration, solidifying its role as a hub for diverse activities.

Rio Tinto Refinery Decarbonisation General Manager, Tim McDougall said the project represented a legacy investment that would have a lasting impact on the community.

“Many of our employees and their families have spent time in the theatre, as students, professionally and as community participants. We are proud to partner with CQUniversity to support the upgrade to this vital community space.”

Demolition works on the theatre began last week, with building expected to be completed later this year.
