CQUniversity Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music (CQCM) students are blending humour and history in their upcoming production of The Complete Works of William Shakespeare – Abridged.

Previously London’s longest-running comedy, the show references every Shakespeare work – all 37 plays in 97 minutes.

CQU Associate Lecturer Theatre Ms Nicole Thomson explained that twice a year, the Bachelor of Theatre students present a fully-staged theatrical work to showcase their studies.

“Not only does the show support some young and emerging artists, but it is a highly entertaining performance,” Ms Thompson said.

“The cast for this production has been expanded from three to 12, which allows for the students own unique take on the production.”

The cast and crew feature students across three years of the degree, who produce the show under the expert guidance of guest director, Ylaria Rogers.

Ms Rogers is a Canberra based director, actor, dramaturge, and producer, renowned for her work across Australia and Britain.

In 2016, she co-founded Freefall Productions, known for their critically acclaimed productions Proof and White Rabbit, Red Rabbit.

From roller skates to rap, Ms Thomson said Ms Rogers has drawn from her extensive experience in the industry to ensure there is something for everyone in the entertaining show.

“When one thinks of Shakespeare, it is often accompanied by puffy pantaloons, florid language that no one understands, and the odd skull or two,” Ms Thomson said.

“If you are familiar with Shakespearian works, you will understand all the references and laugh at this unique take on the iconic stories.” she said.

“However, if you know nothing about the plays or Shakespeare himself, you are sure to learn something new.”
