A Fitter and Machinist sets up and operates precision metal cutting and grinding machines to fabricate and repair parts and products made from metals, plastics, rubber textiles, fibreglass and space age alloys. They are required to determine dimensions by logic or by measuring samples and program electronic instruments that have digital readouts for use.
The WorldSkills Australia Fitting Competition tests skills and knowledge required to perform a range of skills for those working in the Fitting and Machining trade. The work is in a defined range of skilled operations, which require the use of hand tools and general machinery. To be eligible to enter a WorldSkills competition, you must meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Be undertaking an apprenticeship or traineeship in an Australian RTO/TAFE/University
- Be undertaking studies towards a qualification at an Australian RTO/TAFE or University
- Undertaken/completed a relevant qualification at an Australian RTO/TAFE or University
There is no age criteria to enter the Regionals, however, to be eligible to proceed to the National Championships, the National Age Ruling will apply.
A competitor at the WorldSkills Australia National Championships should not be older than 24 years in the year of competition (For 2027 – Born on or after 1 Jan 2003). For more information on eligibility visit WorldSkills.
