Before studying with CQUniversity, Malessa was employed as an enrolled nurse with Queensland Health, working between two rural hospitals. She decided to further her studies and become a registered nurse to progress her career and move further up the ladder in her field of employment.

After graduation, Malessa commenced as a graduate registered nurse at Gayndah Hospital, a rural hospital consisting of an Emergency Department and a Medical Ward for acute patients. Her job involves assessing and treating emergency patients and in-patients, performing X-rays, cannulation and venepuncture, planning and implementing care plans, advocating for patients and conferring with the doctors and members of the Multidisciplinary Team. She also works with out-patients for Telehealth.
