School was awful, I didn’t fit in, 100% effort was never enough. I quit with the minimum level of achievement possible to follow my passion of cooking. In my cooking career I worked with some great chefs around New Zealand, under whom I learned valuable culinary, work and life skills.  The only drawback was that at the time (many years ago) females were unable to get a Cookery Apprenticeship to gain formal qualifications.

Later in life, as a single mother of three, I was selected to study the Hotel and Catering General Management qualification at Waiariki Institute of Technology in Rotorua, New Zealand – and I finally gained my Chef's qualification! Soon after, I returned to Waiariki as a Hospitality Teacher. I worked while continuing my Bachelor of Tourism Management studies, and employment in the Hospitality and Tourism industry.

In 2008 I moved to Australia where I was a training officer in the not-for-profit sector, providing business and pre-employment training, before moving back into a Hospitality Training and Assessing role. In 2017 I obtained employment with CQU teaching Hospitality to a group of school aged learners who were a lot like me when I was younger. My Graduate Certificate in Tertiary and Adult Education gave me additional skills and techniques to help my students gain confidence as learners. It is a privilege to be able to be the teacher for them that would have supported my school years.

Learning is a life-long process and my ongoing study with CQU ensures that my teaching practice meets modern compliance requirements, incorporates new technology, and allows me to adapt to the diverse learning needs of my students.
