Before retirement, John was the Director of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) for Pacific Church Schools. He had a background as a tradesman when he decided to study education and became a secondary school teacher and TAFE teacher. He then moved into religious education.

Before he began his doctorate at CQUni, John was appointed the director of physical facilities and IT at his workplace. His thesis resulted in his position becoming redundant and so was offered a position back in religious education. He was then headhunted to revive the TVET departments in the church schools in the Pacific. He has a Bachelor of Education from Griffith University, a Masters Degree in Education from the University of New England as well as his doctorate from CQUni.

John's qualifications opened doors previously closed and allowed him to undertake joint ventures with several universities and colleges in the Pacific to enable students to receive formal TVET qualifications while still at high school. He was in this position until he retired in 2015.
