I am the Superintendent Mine Geology at CITIC Pacific Mining and have had a diverse and successful career as a geologist over the past 25 years. I completed a Graduate Diploma with CQUniversity in 2016, before returning one year later to complete a Master of Business Administration (MBA). I completed my study whilst working 12+ hour days on a nine days on, five days off roster.
In my current role, I supervise a team of ten mining geologists and technicians, three Perth based geologists, including a database and resource geologists and a team of seven looking after the near mine exploration drilling. I also have responsibility for approximately 40 other contractors involved in the drilling. This involves mentoring, and training where needed, as well as recruitment and order approvals. I am responsible for managing two multi-million dollar contracts related to the drilling campaign, including tendering and contractor selection, claims checking, invoice approval and reporting to the upper levels of the company. Â
Before deciding to undertake study with CQUniversity, I had been working as a geologist for about 15 years in Western Australia. I was made redundant during a large downturn in the industry, so was unable to find more work. It was then that I decided to do an MBA to gain a better understanding of business practices. I feel my studies at CQUniversity have given me a greater understanding of how different parts of business run. i.e. what accountants, human resources personnel etc. do as a theoretical basis for decision making.
